Innovative Learning Grant for Instrumental Music

Interview with Jason Kneebone, MVHS Instrumental Music Director
3D Printed String Instruments

3D Printed String Instruments

“We submitted an extremely outside-the-box proposal to the MVLA Foundation’s Innovative Learning Grant program in the Fall of 2017. The nine-month project allowed us to fuse Music and STEM by 3D-printing a set of string instruments and commissioning a piece for them. Not only did we get the opportunity to collaborate with one of the finest local 3D printing engineers (Jason Reynolds at jinxbot.com), we debuted a brand new piece of orchestral literature by Brian Balmages, a world renowned composer, conductor, and music educator. This was certainly a unique experience for our orchestra musicians – it gave them a chance to appreciate how their own instruments are made and how a very traditional field can be perfectly paired with current technology.”

“This project has created quite a buzz since the performance,” Jason Kneebone continued. “We have folks still asking about it: Will we play the instruments again? Will we play the piece again? The answers are YES!  The Chamber Orchestra will be playing “Irish Junkyard Jam” on our performance tour of Ireland over Spring Break, 2019!”
